Our greatest strengths are our greatest weaknesses

Angela S. Young explains this concept very well, “Our strengths and weaknesses are actually two sides of the same coin. If you look at them as on a continuum, you can see how they fit together. In reality, our weaknesses are merely our strengths out of balance. Tenacity becomes stubbornness when used in the wrong way. Organization over done becomes obsessive control disorder. Love over done becomes enabling.” [helium: 2009]

Our greatest strengths can come from our greatest weaknesses. Seeing an opportunity in every situation whether it is good or bad and making that opportunity count is what is important. We can take our weaknesses and make it our strengths if done correctly and with the correct intentions. We determine who we are and who we become, don’t view your weaknesses as an negative drawback but see it as an opportunity to turn something bad into something great.

Angela S. Young made a very true statement: “All of us are born with certain characteristics. Others develop over time as we grow and learn. These traits are not necessarily good or bad, it is what we do with them that make them good or not so good.” [helium: 2009]

We have the power to turn our weaknesses into our strengths and by doing that we can only reach success in life.

Feeling follow behaviour

People act on how and what they feel.
Emotions are such a strong obsession and I think people don’t always realise the power of their emotions, what they are capable of when acting on their emotions.

Your emotions can make you act in a manner that you don’t usually act or make you do stupid things that you regret afterwards. Especially if you’re a person who act before you think.

It is difficult to always hide away how you feel and sometimes you just have to let it out and it is then that you scream, hit, cry and act in the most ridiculous ways just to get it out. And afterwards feelings follow behaviour; you have to work out for yourself what you are going through and why you did what you did.

We have no right to judge someone else’s behaviour we have no clue what they are going through, we don’t know what they are feeling.

It's better to practice to little than talk a lot

“It is better to practice a little than talk a lot.” A statement owned by Muso Kokushi.

The English idiom, “Talk is Cheap”, fits right in with the topic of the day, as well as “Actions Speak Louder than Words”.

These three statements are similar and make it very clear to us that it’s better to actually do something than just talk about what you would like to do. It’s so easy to say a lot and then only do little, the challenge is to keep your word and do what you have promised. You don’t get credited for everything you say you get respect for that what you actually get done.

I absolutely hate it if people only make a lot of promises and never keep their word, you get so many people that sound great with all their big talk and promises but you get so little people that actually keep to their promises and do what they said they would do.
To me the great and brave ones are those who do what they promise to do and the droppers are those who are all talk and no deeds.

In Afrikaans we will say, “Se minder en doen meer.”

It is a poor idea to lie to yourself

Is it really that bad? Lets be honest we all have done it some or other time in some or other situation…where you tell yourself, “I really did my part for the group assignment, I don’t have to do more” or “I know I have studied enough why did I fail?” or even “I don’t know why she doesn’t like me I have done nothing wrong to do her harm”.

We all lie to ourselves some or other time to make ourselves feel better about something we have done or are going to do. Sometimes we even seek comfort from our friends to ease our guilt. But why do we do it, too sooth our conscious and to make the truth lighter?

It is nice to think that you did nothing wrong to have a guilt free conscience, but it will hit you like cold water in the face when you have to wake up to reality.

We must start to face the music to stand up for the things we do, take ownership of our wrong doing and correct them or challenge ourselves to do better. It is so difficult to be honest all the time, but that is the only way to feel that true happiness.

Not all who wander are lost

“Not all who wander are lost.” This statement is made by J.R.R. Tolkien.

The question is what does it mean to you as person?
To me it means that, not all who wander are lost, some people have no direction in life, no ambition and no drive, and that is why they are wandering. Not because they don’t know where to go but because they don’t want to go anywhere. People sometimes look as if they are wandering but actually they are just not doing anything.

It is important for us to keep our goals and ambitions in line and work towards them each and every single day, and if we get tired just to work even harder to reach them, otherwise we start wandering and we don’t want to loose our way or direction to what we are working for in life.

It is important to remember the following statement to keep us from wandering. “Where did we come from, what are we and where are we going.” (unknown) If we keep ourselves on the road of hard work, working towards that which is important to us in life we can only reach success.

How do you step from the top of a 100 foot pole?

Climbing a 100 foot pole is hard work, but how do you step from the top of that 100 foot pole.

If I think about this question I see it more figurative than literally, it makes me think about the statement: “The difference between being ordinary and extraordinary.” (unknown) Taking a challenge and making it reality.

It makes me think about the elections…
We have placed them all on a 100 foot poles with all their promises and inspirational logos, but the question is how will they step down from that 100 foot pole, prove themselves and keep their promises once they have been elected.

The faces of the leaders of the different political parties such as: Helen Zille – DA, Jacob Zuma – ANC, Patricia De Lille – ID, etc, are all around our cities and towns on big posters. These posters are about their promises and their way of how they will be leading our country once they have been chosen. All of them have been making all kinds of glamorous promises through the build up of the elections to the public in order to get into the favour of the public and to get the public’s vote.

The next leader will be appointed, that leader would have been chosen and appointed by us, the public. Then what…they will come down from the 100 foot pole and they will have to prove themselves. Will they be able to meet our expectations? That is where the reality strikes…will they take the leadership and make South Africa a better place or will we become the next Zimbabwe?

And what if they are not the chosen one, do they still have power or what was their position actually worth on the 100 foot pole? Do they still have a voice thereafter? The reality in all of this is “it is easier said than done” will they be able to step down from the pole and lead because the climbing up of the pole was hard work but the stepping down is even harder.

We are what we do

I believe we are what we do by “changing the world one small action at a time.” (wearewhatwedo: 2009)

In the movie Hansie the school principle said something truly important, he asked the boys in the assembly the following: “What makes great people great: Being leaders of society, making a difference in the world. We need to constantly build the world and the people around us. The world is anxiously waiting for heroes to rise up, the question is, are you going to be one of them?” (Hansie: 2009)

If we do nothing we are nothing, if we do everything we are everything. Don’t wait for someone else to do something, take the leadership and just do it. It is the only way things will really get done. If you feel passionate about something act on those feelings. People are so used to waiting for someone else or thinking someone else will do it, but the truth is…no they will not, you are the person everyone is waiting for, you can make the change.

If everyone can get this mindset so much can happen; the world might just become a better place. “You have to become the change you want to see in this World.” (Gandhi)

The main philosophy behind, we are what we do is:
“Small actions x lots of people = big change.” (wearewhatwedo: 2009)
